The Formula E season is not going as hoped for reigning champion Nyck de Vries. He took a strong win in the opening race in Saudi Arabia, but then everything fell apart. The Dutchman has only scored one point in the last three races. He took it at the last showdown in Monaco a week and a half ago. As a result, he currently sits eighth in the championship with 39 points, with less than half the points accumulated by teammate and World Cup leader Stoffel Vandoorne. De Vries doesn’t have to wait long for his chance for revenge, however, as Formula E is holding two races in the German capital of Berlin on Saturday and Sunday.
The E-Prixes in Berlin are home races for Mercedes, but the circuit at Tempelhof Airport is also good for the team. De Vries is therefore looking forward to getting back in his car. “It’s good to be racing again after a difficult weekend in Monaco. In my opinion, we had a good weekend in terms of speed, but unfortunately we couldn’t translate that into the result and the hoped-for number of points in the race,” he said, looking back briefly on the race in Monaco. “It’s good to get back to work so quickly at a track that historically suits our team well. Personally, I have very good memories of Berlin and can’t wait to get back on track.”
Team-mate Vandoorne clinched his first win of the season in Formula E in Monaco and took over the championship lead. He confirms De Vries’ observation that Mercedes often does well in Berlin. “I’ve been on pole here a few times and clinched a couple of podiums. I also won my first Formula E race here in 2020, so you can say that the track suits us well. However, it’s also a job that can go wrong if you can’t get the car in the right window. The tarmac of the old airport is unique, so it’s important to get the car in a window where it works well. If we can do that, we should be among the front runners again and hopefully score a lot of points.”
