May 28, 2022 – In the draw for the new Champions League season, Ajax are in Pot 1. The team from Amsterdam depended on the result in the final of this Champions League season, which was eventually won by Real Madrid. This means that the team from Amsterdam is definitely one of the eight group leaders in the coming season.
Because Real Madrid conquered the Champions League, Liverpool again missed a top prize. Previously, Manchester City had trumped Virgil van Dijk’s team in the fight for the national title. At the draw, the numbers will become one of the top six countries in the group leader coefficient rankings. In addition, the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League take a place in pot 1. Since Real Madrid have already become Spanish champions, the ticket for pot 1 moves to number seven in Europe: the Netherlands.
Ajax therefore avoid superpowers like Real, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. But Amsterdammers can’t call themselves rich just yet. Clubs like FC Barcelona, Chelsea and thus Liverpool can still roll out of Pot 2. A group with, for example, Inter or Borussia Dortmund from Pot 3 and Club Brugge from Pot 4 would still see Ajax start in a group of deaths.
Last season, Ajax had a relatively easy group. The team from Amsterdam was linked with the Portuguese national champions (Sporting CP) and met Borussia Dortmund and Besiktas. The team of outgoing coach Erik ten Hag finished the group stage without dropping a point but were eliminated by Benfica in the round of 16.
