Robin Frijns seemed to be in the right place at Envision Racing, the team he has been racing for in Formula E since 2018. He was expected to sign a new contract with the team that would allow him, at least in the early years, to continue in the Gen3 era, but the team and driver reportedly failed to reach an agreement in the negotiations. That doesn’t have to mean the end of Frijns’ Formula E career, however, because loud The race he is emphatically in the interests of Abt Sportsline.
Abt was active as the Audi factory team in Formula E for many years, but after the car manufacturer left the team, the team disappeared from the starting field before this season. In 2023, however, Abt returns to the electric racing class in its first year with the new Gen3 car. The customer team does not yet have a supplier for the drive train, but the search is in full swing. This also applies to the driver’s front. According to reports, there is already a verbal agreement between Abt and Frijns, who drove for the team in the DTM for several years and is therefore a logical candidate. This also applies to Nico Müller, who has a good chance of becoming Frijns’ teammate.
Frijns is currently in his fourth Formula E season with Envision Racing. The first season of cooperation was also the most successful so far, as in the 2018/19 season the Limburg native recorded his first two wins on his way to fourth place in the championship. He was also on the podium twice this year. In the past two seasons there was no win, but Frijns was on the podium four times. However, with three podium finishes in the first six races, he has made an excellent start to the new Formula E season. That puts him fourth in the championship, just ten points behind leader Stoffel Vandoorne.
