Shortly after the start, Pierre Gasly touched the right rear wheel of compatriot Esteban Ocon and suffered ground damage. The balance in the AT03 changed and that made defending more than difficult. Later in the race, Aston Martin driver Lance Stroll tried to get to the side, but Gasly knocked the Canadian over and received a five-second penalty. The AlphaTauri driver was happy with the penalty, which eventually put him in thirteenth place behind Daniel Ricciardo.
“They thought it was worth a five-second penalty and it was. I totally understand the decision,” said the Frenchman. Motorsport.com† “I was already damaged in the first corner, so I was one for the whole race sitting duck† I tried to ride as hard as possible and fully defend every position. There were light touches [met Lance], but I was responsible for it and deserved the time penalty.” Speaking of the Ocon collision, Gasly said, “I think the three of us went through the first turn and I damaged the ground there. After that, it slipped and I lost pressure on the tires. As a result, the tires overheated very quickly at high speeds. I had no pace at all.”
It wasn’t the only misfortune that happened to Gasly at Barcelona. Due to a defective exhaust and the resulting fire, the entire third practice session passed him by. He hopes to hit back in Monaco. “It’s frustrating. It’s against us in almost every race,” he continues, dismayed. “We can’t even do a decent job. I just want a flawless weekend. That didn’t happen in Spain either. Unfortunately, that’s part of the sport. We have a lot of obstacles at the moment, but we won’t.” give up and come back with renewed energy and ambition.”
