Sergio Perez has made an excellent start to the 2022 Formula 1 season. The driver from Guadalajara took his first pole position in the premier class in Saudi Arabia and finished second at the races in Australia and Emilia-Romagna. He is currently third in the championship behind Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. According to former Red Bull driver and Viaplay analyst David Coulthard, Perez is currently showing more than enough to land a new contract with the team. However, team boss Christian Horner thinks it’s a bit early to make a decision on the second seat for 2023.
“Checo is doing a great job,” said Horner, among others, on Saturday Motorsport.com to know. “He rides at a very high level. He’s more comfortable with the team this year and the current car suits him better, it doesn’t have the same quirky traits as our previous three cars. We’re happy with his work, but we’ve only had four races. So we’re still early in the season. But everyone in the team is very happy with him.”
Verstappen, who earlier this year extended his contract with Red Bull Racing until the end of 2028, was already positive about Perez during Thursday’s press conference. “Obviously being in the team for a year helps,” said the reigning world champion of his teammate’s better form in 2022. “Also, everyone is starting from scratch with the new rules and it seems like he’s feeling a lot better now sitting in the car. That’s very positive for the team and of course we were very happy with our performance in Imola [Red Bull scoorde een één-twee in de Grand Prix van Emilie-Romagna]† Let’s hope we can continue like this.”
