19:50 – Liverpool’s line-up for the Champions League final against Real Madrid has been revealed. As a base player, Virgil van Dijk provides the Dutch input in the final battle. In addition, Jürgen Klopp prefers Thiago Alcântara and Ibrahim Konaté to Naby Keita and Joël Matip respectively. The final starts at 9 p.m.
Where Carlo Ancelotti announced Real Madrid’s line-up more than two hours before kick-off at the Stade de France, Klopp waited fifteen minutes before kick-off. In the run-up to the final, it became apparent that Thiago could be used. He was injured in the last league game against Wolverhampton Wanderers but the injury is not serious enough for the Spanish midfielder to miss the final.
As usual, Alisson Becker is in goal at Liverpool. Virgil van Dijk forms the central duo with Konaté, while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have to cover the sides as full-backs. The midfield consists of Thiago, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Luis Díaz will have to challenge the Madrid defence.
Liverpool narrowly missed out on the English title last week but have already won two trophies this season: the FA Cup and the League Cup. The Champions League was to be the third prize for Klopp’s men. Liverpool also won the Champions League in 2019. Then Tottenham Hotspur was eliminated in the final. Real Madrid last won the award in 2018.
