Ayrton Senna is considered by many to be the best driver Formula 1 has ever known and had many of his successes with McLaren. Together with the racing team he won all his F1 titles. After his death in 1994, the Williams team he was driving for at the time of the accident continued to bear the three-time world champion’s name and sported the Senna S logo on its nose every F1 season. The Grove-based racing team opted to permanently remove the name from the car in 2022.
At the unveiling of the Williams FW44, Team Principal Jost Capito stated: “The decision was made because we want to look to the future. We are on the eve of a new era with a new car. Our museum has been refreshed and features a special room to honor Ayrton,” Capito said of the decision. “I think we have to stop to constantly remind drivers what happened. I think it’s about time to put that behind us. We can now honor Senna in our museum.”
McLaren decided in Monte Carlo to continue honoring Senna’s name and placed the logo on the side of the halo. In a short video released by the team on Friday morning, McLaren paid tribute to the Brazilian and made it clear how delighted he is to bear the name. “His courage, commitment and resourcefulness set standards for our team to this day.”
The inclusion of the Senna name in the MCL36 has the full support of the Senna Foundation. “I can’t think of a better race than Monaco to give Ayrton that recognition,” said McLaren CEO Zak Brown. “Ayrton has won the Grand Prix six times, more than any other driver. It proves that his skill and ability at the wheel of an F1 car can rarely be matched. The addition of the car is permanent and has the support of his family.” It serves as a constant reminder of Ayrton’s sensational talent to us as a team and to our fans around the world.”
Senna drove for McLaren from 1988 to 1993 and won the world titles in 1988, 1990 and 1991. He started 96 times for the Woking stable and won 35 races of his 96 starts for the team. He celebrated his last victory with McLaren in 1993 at the Australian Grand Prix.
