April 14, 2022 – Pep Guardiola is proud of his Manchester City, who reached the semi-finals of the Champions League at the expense of Atlético Madrid on Wednesday night. The coach set a fine record and spoke highly of Orange international Nathan Aké after the game.
After the heated game (0-0) at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, Guardiola spoke to the media. “I’m proud of my team because our opponent was very good. We tried to get the ball with all our might but we just couldn’t do it. If you look at the chances, they should have scored. Atlético was much stronger in the second half but we defended very well.”
Aké, on the other hand, was a starting XI in the first leg but had to settle for a place on the bench in Madrid. As a substitute, he still had an important role in the draw. “Fernandinho was great, he gave us a boost. The same goes for Nathan Ake. This phase of the tournament is always very tough. So that’s a huge compliment to all my players.”
It is Guardiola’s ninth time that a club has reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. He will overtake Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti and focus on unique wins with City. The club has never won the Champions League. “It is the third time in our history that we are in the semifinals. That’s a really great performance for us,” said Guardiola, who now has to play against Real Madrid.
